My shift begins by sitting down with the parents and working out my responsibilities and requirements for the day. I create and review the baby’s schedule and make preparations and adjustments to satisfy that schedule. I also prepare formula for my shift and gather all the tools I will require. Doing so greatly reduces the back and forth that can prove to be disruptive for the baby and parents while they sleep. As the night progresses, I monitor the baby’s feeding, bowel elimination and sleep patterns, while keeping the environment conducive to sleep. When my shift is done, I prepare bottles for the following day, clean up and take care of everything related to the baby so that mom and baby can wake up to a clean and pleasant space.
